The story
Kim and Nele welcome you to their restaurant in the heart of Gent, a place built on a simple idea: "lekker eten" in a relaxed, unpretentious setting. Their name, Roots, speaks to origin and belonging — both their own story and the foundation of their cooking.
The atmosphere is informal and welcoming, designed for guests to settle in and enjoy a meal without fuss. The kitchen offers a menu of modern cuisine, presented as a set lunch for €50 or a dinner menu for €75. Lunch is served Monday through Friday, with dinner available Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. The restaurant is closed for a winter break from 19 December 2025 to 5 January 2026, and for Aalst Carnival in February 2026.
Roots has earned a Michelin Recommended distinction, a recognition that aligns with their commitment to straightforward, well-executed cooking in a convivial setting. The restaurant's own words capture its spirit: "Hier start ons eigen verhaal, hier groeien onze wortels." Here, their own story begins, and here their roots grow.
