The story
In the Runkst district of Hasselt, Brasserie Rongese brings the spirit of a classic Flemish brasserie to life. Owner Peter Merken opened the doors in March 2019, after six years running Bistro Nano in the city centre. The name 'Rongese' is the old name for this neighbourhood, first recorded in a 1147 charter – a nod to the restaurant’s deep local roots.
The kitchen is led by Cees van Corler, former sous-chef at the legendary Scholteshof. Together, they focus on traditional dishes made with honest, fresh ingredients. Think vol-au-vent, steak tartare, hearty stews, mussels, and homemade fries with real mayonnaise. The menu changes with the seasons and highlights Limburg produce, such as asparagus from Aspergehoeve Lavrijsen and vegetables from Hof van Eef.
Merken, a passionate sommelier, curates a diverse wine list with both classics and lesser-known finds. Beer lovers are also well served, with a rotating selection of specialty beers on tap.
The atmosphere is warm and unpretentious – what Merken calls a "volks kader" where everyone is welcome, from families to business guests. A spacious outdoor terrace makes summer dining a pleasure, while the interior strikes a balance between cosy and refined.
Brasserie Rongese earned a Michelin Recommended distinction in 2026, a recognition that matches its consistent quality and friendly service. Lunch is served Thursday and Friday, with a three-course formule starting at €55. Dinner offers à la carte suggestions and a degustation menu of three or four courses, with an all-in wine pairing option. Private dining is available in a separate room for events.
This is a brasserie that knows exactly what it is: a place for straightforward, well-executed Flemish cooking, backed by a serious drinks list and a genuine welcome.
