The story
Njord takes its name from the Norse deity who guided sailors safely home. Fittingly, the kitchen’s focus is the North Sea, with fish and shellfish prepared with a distinct Scandinavian lightness. “What was still swimming in the North Sea yesterday is on your plate at Njord today,” the team says. The cooking avoids heavy sauces and unnecessary showmanship – pure, natural flavours take centre stage.
The restaurant occupies the seventh and eighth floors of the ABC Cruise Building in Zeebrugge. At 40 metres high, floor-to-ceiling windows (7 metres tall) draw the eye to panoramic views of the sea, the yacht harbour, and the Bruges hinterland. On clear evenings you can see from Ostend to Cadzand. The interior, designed by Olivier Salens in collaboration with Lieven Musschoot, balances modern lines with warmth: two 4.5-metre Scotch silver birches anchor the room, while long oak beams and a fabric stretched ceiling provide excellent acoustics.
Njord stands out for having a wood-fired grill at this height – a rare feature. It is used for tailfish, lobster, Dover sole, and skate wing, all treated simply. Oysters and other fruits de mer are also available. For those who prefer land, West Flemish red beef and rib steak from their own breeding are grilled too. The cuisine blends Belgian and Classic French foundations with a Nordic-inspired clarity, and the restaurant is part of the Family Tradition group, which includes several other respected addresses in the region.
Njord’s consistent focus on quality seafood and its striking location earned it a Michelin Recommended distinction in 2026 – a recognition that matches the calm, precise cooking found here. Whether for lunch or dinner, at a table by the window or on the terrace during warmer months, the experience is defined by straightforward excellence and a sense of place that is hard to replicate.
