The story
On the historic Grote Markt in Ieper, Klei brings a modern, seasonal approach to the table. Chef Jonathan Devogel and host Carl Couvreur run this intimate restaurant, which has earned a Michelin Recommended distinction for its focused, ingredient-driven cooking. The atmosphere is described as casual-fine dining — precise and thoughtful without being stiff.
Klei’s menu, called the ‘K’ Collection, changes with the seasons and is built around a small number of carefully composed courses. Guests choose from three, four, or five courses (€62, €77, and €90 respectively), with optional wine pairings. At lunch, a more compact Gastrolunch is available for €42 (€53 with dessert), offering a teaser, first course, and a main course based on the day’s inspiration.
Dishes from the current menu include horse mackerel with rhubarb, yogurt, and kosho; wild sea bass with XO and zaalouk; hamachi with poultry jus, huacatay, and zucchini; and beef sirloin ‘BBQ’ with young onion, cucumber, and ponzu. A strawberry dessert with basil, goat’s milk, and hazelnut rounds out the meal. Vegetarian and pescatarian alternatives are available on request.
Klei serves lunch from noon (last order at 1:15 PM) and dinner from 7 PM (last order at 8:15 PM). The restaurant is closed on Wednesdays, Saturday lunchtimes, and Sundays. Guests planning to attend the Last Post ceremony at 8 PM are advised to book for 7 PM, as a break will be scheduled after the welcome and aperitif. The restaurant also offers takeaway and can accommodate private parties.
