The story
Since opening in 2013, EssenCiel has become a steady presence in the city’s culinary landscape. Under the leadership of chefs Niels Brants and Romina Charels, the restaurant focuses on seasonal ingredients, letting the product take centre stage. In 2019, their consistent work earned them a Michelin star, recognizing high-quality cooking that stays true to pure flavours.
The kitchen presents a single degustation menu called “Essence,” available at lunch and dinner. Dishes evolve every four weeks, reflecting the best of the season. Recent offerings include Shrimp “Quisquilla” with tomato and aji amarillo, Balfego tuna with grilled cucumber and koshihikari rice, and blue lobster paired with sweetbread and zucchini. The menu finishes with apricot, sheep’s milk and honey, or an optional cheese selection. Wine pairing is offered by the glass, including non-alcoholic options.
EssenCiel describes itself as a young, driven team passionate about gastronomy. The cooking is contemporary Modern French in style, with a clear respect for fresh, local produce. The atmosphere on Bondgenotenlaan is elegant yet unpretentious — a fine-dining setting that feels accessible.
With its Michelin star and a thoughtful, regularly changing menu, EssenCiel has earned its place among Leuven’s notable restaurants. The team accommodates dietary restrictions when communicated in advance, ensuring each guest can fully enjoy the experience.
