The story

Bistrot Mentin in Liège: An Intimate Bistro with a Changing Menu

The chef and the kitchen

Bistrot Mentin in Liège operates as a focused bistro where Marie Corthouts manages every detail of the kitchen. Recognized by Le Fooding for its consistent quality, the spot thrives on a compact menu that shifts entirely each week. Her mother Bernadette handles all dessert production, keeping the daily rhythm grounded in familiar hands. This deliberate pace allows the bistro kitchen to maintain high standards without relying on a large staff.

Standout plates and seasonal rotations

A recent lunch service highlighted a sandwich layered with Savoy cabbage, spicy ‘nduja, and taggiasche olives bound by lemony mascarpone. The pasta course featured maccheroni tossed with parmesan, fresh stracchino cheese, and a light dusting of sage and nutmeg. These preparations demonstrate a quiet confidence in bistro cooking that favors precise seasoning over complex plating. Visitors usually cap the meal with a straightforward affogato.

The room and evening service

Star-patterned ceramic tiles anchor the floor beneath exposed brick walls lined with framed street photography. Small collectibles rest on open shelving near the counter, adding texture to the narrow layout. Once the lunch crowd departs, Marie switches the space into a relaxed bar environment stocked with a wide selection of beverages. The venue also hosts an exclusive monthly Monday evening set menu that draws regular patrons.

Timeless star-patterned tiles, street photography lining the brick walls, cool little knick-knacks scattered about… Located down an equally adorable side street, Bistrot Mentin is a cute little joint which reminds all the haters that Liege is without a doubt the Mosan capital of unfussy, well-made eats. As an ambassador of the genre, the unfazed boss Marie Corthouts (aka Mama Lova Lova) sure knows her shizz, as she singlehandedly works the show. Earning our affection, she sends out a short menu that changes every week: a soup, a sandwich, a pasta dish, a few desserts made by her mother Bernadette, and basta! Lunch that day featured: a flawless sammie with Savoy cabbage, ‘nduja, taggiasche olives and lemony mascarpone; delicious maccheroni gooey with parmesan and stracchino (a fresh cheese from Lombardy), plus sage and nutmeg; and a caffeinated affogato to wrap things up. After lunch, Marie packs away the pots and pans, and goes into bar mode with a drinks menu that’s as generous as she. One for the diary: make sure to reserve your spot for the special Monday evening set menu, hosted exclusively once a month…//
