The story
In a quiet street in Nieuwpoort, Restaurant Ander operates as a true huiskamerrestaurant – a living room restaurant where the line between dining and being welcomed into a private home blurs. The philosophy is straightforward: a fixed, seasonal menu built around local products straight from the farmer and the North Sea. There are no choices, no online menu to browse. The surprise begins only when you sit down, a deliberate approach born from the belief that the real taste experience starts at the table.
Chef Arno and hostess Hermien met during their studies at Hotelschool Ter Duinen, bonding over a shared love for cooking. Arno honed his craft in kitchens of considerable pedigree – De Librije (three Michelin stars), Souvenir (one star), and Ricard Camarena (two stars). That experience translates into a pure, ingredient-driven French cuisine that lets the quality of each product speak. Hermien, meanwhile, has grown into a passionate host with a deep appreciation for wine, curating pairings that complement the ever-changing menu.
The current spring menu runs until mid-June, offered as either five courses (€84) or six courses (€95). Those who prefer cheese over dessert can add it for €11, with an extra cheese course for €14. Wine pairings start at €44 for five courses, with juice and tasting options also available. Because the menu is a surprise, the kitchen asks guests to inform them in advance of any vegetarian preferences, allergies, or dietary needs – adjustments can be made beforehand but not on the spot.
The atmosphere is warm and unhurried. There is one seating per service: 7:15 PM for evening dinners, 12:30 PM for Sunday lunch. The restaurant’s Michelin Recommended status, awarded in 2026, underscores the quiet precision and sincerity of what Arno and Hermien are doing – no gimmicks, just honest, seasonal French cooking served in an environment that feels like home.
