The story
Restaurant Plat Préféré in the village of Snaaskerke, just outside Ostend, is rooted in a family tradition of good food and convivial dining. Chef Laurent Gouwy, who gained experience both in Belgium and abroad, now runs the kitchen with a clear philosophy: fair prices, respect for the product, and personal, attentive service.
The dining room is described as "sfeervol" – atmospheric and warm – making it a place where both locals and visitors feel at ease. The menu changes regularly, with a monthly offering that showcases classic cuisine with careful technique. A recent menu included house-smoked salmon with brioche, cucumber and Granny Smith apple, followed by grilled asparagus with glazed pork belly and maltese sauce. Main courses ranged from stuffed ray wing with southern-style purée, young spinach and sea lavender, to lamb leg with gratin dauphinois and green bean ragout. Dessert brought a crispy lemon tart with meringue and kiwi, or a cheese board for a small supplement.
The three-course menu is priced at €55, with a four-course option at €69. It is this kind of honest, well-executed cooking that earned Plat Préféré a Michelin Bib Gourmand for 2026, an award that recognises good quality, good value cooking.
Chef Gouwy and his team aim to share the experiences they have gathered over the years, and the result is a restaurant that feels both personal and professional. Whether you are stopping by for a weekday dinner or a Sunday lunch, Plat Préféré offers a genuine taste of classic Belgian hospitality.
