The story
Le Grand Pré sits quietly along the Hantes river in Hantes-Wihéries, a short drive from Thuin, Mons and Binche. The name translates to “the big meadow,” and the restaurant lives up to it: a peaceful, bucolic house where the surrounding greenery and the murmur of the water set the tone. Since opening in 2016, this has been a place designed for unhurried meals, with outdoor seating for warmer days and a warm interior for the cooler months.
The restaurant is run by Nina and Fred, who together with their team create an atmosphere that feels instantly familiar. The website promises that “on se sent rapidement comme à la maison” – you quickly feel at home. That ease extends to the service, described as attentive without being intrusive (“service aux petits oignons”). Whether you come for a quiet dinner or a celebration, the approach is the same: genuine hospitality in a setting that encourages you to linger.
Le Grand Pré’s kitchen focuses on French cuisine, with a menu that changes with the seasons. The Michelin Guide has recognised the restaurant with a Bib Gourmand – a mark of good value and quality cooking – and more recently awarded it a Recommended distinction for 2026. It also appears in Gault&Millau and the Table de Terroir guide, confirming its place among the region’s reliable tables. The emphasis is on honest, well-executed dishes that let the ingredients speak, without unnecessary fuss.
Beyond the dining room, Le Grand Pré caters to banquets and events, with a dedicated space for larger gatherings. There is also a gîte on the property, making it possible to extend your stay in the countryside. The restaurant is wheelchair accessible, offers vegetarian options, and has ample parking – details that reflect the owners’ desire to make good food and a calm setting accessible to everyone.
