The story
Restaurant De Mijlpaal is the story that Jan Menten and An Penxten have been writing together since 2002. They met while working in the kitchen of a caterer, and soon after, the dream of opening their own place was born. The former pastry shop of chef Jan Menten's parents, in the heart of Tongeren, proved to be the ideal location. A thorough renovation transformed the old bakery into the modern, stylish restaurant they christened De Mijlpaal.
The name refers to a Roman milestone from around 200 AD, discovered during excavations in Tongeren in 1817. This unique archaeological find mentions routes towards the Rhine border and the Champagne region, confirming Tongeren as Belgium's oldest city. For Jan and An, the name was obvious: opening their restaurant was one of the most important decisions of their lives, happening just a stone's throw from where that very milestone was unearthed. At De Mijlpaal, you experience a unique gastronomic experience that celebrates those important moments.
