The story
In 2002, Veroniek and Benjamin transformed a protected private house on the Appelmarkt into a restaurant that feels like a home. The original character of the building was preserved, and the result is a warm, relaxed space—with a bar, a proper dining room, and a terrace that catches the sun and frames the view of Sint-Niklaaskerk. The couple works together: Benjamin in the kitchen, Veroniek at the front of house.
The menu at De Oogappel leans on the French-Belgian classics, but Benjamin adds an occasional Asian accent. He works with fresh, seasonal produce sourced as locally as possible, and everything is made in-house. The house speciality is kalfszwezeriken—calf sweetbreads, served crisp with a fine Champagne sauce. The menu also offers a tartare of Black Angus with Thai flavours, a bouillabaisse with rouille, and a Rising Sun starter of hand-cut tuna tartare with avocado and Japanese notes. A dedicated section of sharing starters makes it easy to begin with a few small plates, such as homemade shrimp croquettes or wontons with pork and Sichuan pepper.
The restaurant’s consistent quality has been recognised by the Michelin guide, which awarded it a Recommended status in 2026. That recognition reflects the straightforward, well-executed cooking and the genuine hospitality that defines the place. De Oogappel is open for lunch and dinner, closed on Sunday and Monday—a neighbourhood restaurant that draws diners from Veurne and beyond.
