The story

Bar Bonk in Westende: Coastal Seafood and Beachfront Dining

The coastal kitchen

Bar Bonk in Westende serves a focused coastal cuisine right on the Saint-Laurent dunes. Visitors walk straight into a wooden and windowed space designed for relaxed dining without advance bookings. The kitchen operates continuously during the summer season, preparing fresh catches and seasonal plates as guests arrive. This walk-up model fits the unhurried rhythm of the Belgian shoreline, allowing diners to claim a seat at the seafood bar or settle near the protected terrace while waiting for their table.

Signature plates

The menu highlights uncomplicated preparations that let the ingredients speak. A signature spicy broth forms the base for langoustines and razor clams, which remain the most requested item on the board. Stone fish arrives alongside house-made aioli and thin strips of fried cod, while marinated tomatoes and lettuce share a plate with patatas bravas topped in crumbled feta and fresh rosemary. Guests often finish their meal with an iced almond milk ristretto served directly on the terrace.

Wooden interiors and dune views

Recognized by Le Fooding for its consistent approach to Belgian seaside cuisine, the venue balances pared-back interiors with direct access to the wind-swept beach. Groovy background music pairs with the natural sounds of the North Sea to create a quiet backdrop for evening meals. Above the dining area, five spacious suites offer uninterrupted ocean vistas for those extending their stay. The entire setup reflects a deliberate choice to keep the experience grounded in place rather than pretense.

A sailor never complains, he always perseveres and looks ahead. Unless, that is, hungers strikes, like it did for us that afternoon after a walk along the beach. The new addition to the family that brought us De Lanteirne and Vecino, Bonk is a little gem of a spot (wooden and windowed interiors, pared-back vibes, a sheltered and secluded outdoor space), just for its location alone, on the windswept dunes of Saint-Laurent beach. But also for its cuisine, served non-stop, which is its major pulling point. We ordered: langoustines and razor clams cooked in a flavor-packed spicy broth – the house specialty; stone fish served with aioli and strips of crispy fried cod; plus marinated tomatoes, lettuce and patatas bravas topped with feta and rosemary. And we even eyeballed some extravagant and mouthwatering lobster on the neighboring table. Will we come back? Without a doubt. The iced almond milk ristretto on the terrace already had us dreaming of a weekend away in one of the five suites upstairs, offering full-frontal sea views. // Anika Kane
