The story
Brasserie Daefnis, a Michelin Recommended restaurant in the 2026 guide, brings a contemporary interpretation of classic French cuisine to the small town of Lauwe, near Kortrijk in West Flanders. The restaurant occupies a beautifully restored townhouse in the heart of the village, creating a setting that is both elegant and welcoming.
The kitchen operates on the rhythm of the seasons, sourcing fresh, local produce that is grown sustainably. This commitment to quality and reducing the ecological footprint is evident in every dish. The team works closely with passionate suppliers to revive traditional Flemish flavours, giving them a modern twist. The result is Modern French cuisine that feels rooted in its place.
The atmosphere is informal and homely, with an unpretentious charm that puts guests at ease. The dining room is housed in a renovated herenhuis, where the original character has been preserved while creating a comfortable space for leisurely meals. The restaurant also offers outdoor seating for warmer days.
The menu changes regularly, but always offers a choice of à la carte dishes, a weekly lunch formula at €39, and a monthly three-course menu at €65. Standout options include the Secreto n° 7 from Rubia de Gallega beef, Thai slow roasted ribs with twelve secret spices, and the crispy brioche with smoked eel from the Oosterschelde. Seafood is a highlight, with line-caught sea bass and North Sea shrimp, or the classic sole meunière served with hand-cut fries and bio salad. For dessert, the tropical île flottante with yuzu, pineapple, and passion fruit is a refreshing finale, while the Dame Blanche with Madagascar vanilla remains a timeless choice.
Sharefood dishes are designed for the table to explore new flavours together, from the Wagyu secreto to the burrata with Romesco sauce. The kitchen also accommodates vegetarian preferences with a dedicated dish.
Brasserie Daefnis is the work of Annick and Daphnis, who have created a place where quality ingredients, careful cooking, and a relaxed atmosphere come together. It is a worthy addition to the Michelin Guide’s selection.
