The story
Since 1979, Fogo de Chão has kept the flames of the culinary art of churrasco burning. Rooted in the mountainous landscapes of Rio Grande do Sul, the founders grew up on a traditional Southern Brazilian farm, learning the gaucho grilling tradition that defines this Brazilian steakhouse. Their first restaurant, a wood structure in the countryside of Porto Alegre, grew from an obsessive dedication to quality. Today, the Barra da Tijuca location in Rio de Janeiro brings that same fire to the city.
The churrasco experience at Fogo de Chão is built around fire-roasted meats carved tableside by gaucho chefs. Cuts like Picanha (prime top sirloin), Fraldinha (bottom sirloin), and Costela (beef ribs) are slow-roasted over open flames. The Market Table offers fresh, vibrant salads and sides, while Bar Fogo introduces Brazilian-inspired small plates and cocktails. The full churrasco experience is complemented by a wine list that earned the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence in 2023, a recognition of the restaurant's commitment to quality pairings. The Founders Tribute Wine Collection features selections from Argentina, Chile, and California, each paired specifically with the restaurant's signature meats.
From its origins in Porto Alegre to a flagship in New York City, Fogo de Chão has expanded while staying true to its heritage. The Barra da Tijuca location is part of that journey, offering a taste of Brazil's churrasco tradition in a setting that balances warmth and sophistication. Whether you come for the fire-roasted meats, the Market Table, or a glass of wine, the experience is rooted in the same passion that started nearly five decades ago. The restaurant also accommodates group dining, private events, and caters to dietary needs with gluten-free options.
