The story

San Omakase, Rio de Janeiro – Michelin-Starred Japanese Omakase by Chef André Kawai

The first Michelin-starred Japanese restaurant in Rio

San Omakase, located in the Leblon neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, earned a Michelin star in 2026 for its high-quality cooking. It is the first Japanese restaurant in the city to receive the distinction. The restaurant is built around the omakase tradition: the chef decides the menu, selecting each ingredient with care.

Chef André Kawai and the team

At the helm is Chef André Kawai, recognized as an ambassador of sushi in Brazil and Portugal. He spent much of his life in Japan, deepening his roots in Japanese confectionery, and has trained at École Lenôtre in Paris, the Instituto Mausi Sebess in Buenos Aires, and Anhembi Morumbi. The kitchen also includes Chef Vinicius Shimara, a specialist in Japanese cuisine with a diploma from the World Sushi Skills Institute, and Chef Cesar Yukio, the pâtissier. Jade Mayworm serves as sake sommelier, bringing expertise in Japanese beverages.

The omakase experience

Every dish at San Omakase is created using fresh fish selected by the chef on the day of each service. The menu changes with each visit, offering a progression of colorful, distinct presentations built on Japanese ingredients. The restaurant sources its fish daily, ensuring peak freshness.

Atmosphere rooted in Japanese culture

The space is designed to honor Japanese gastronomy and culture. Every detail – ceramics, utensils, ingredients, and drinks – is sourced from Japan. The environment is intimate, with counter dining that allows guests to watch the chefs at work. The restaurant also offers catering and private chef services.

A restaurant that respects tradition

San Omakase’s Michelin star reflects its commitment to precision and authenticity. By combining daily-selected fish, Japanese imports, and a team deeply connected to the culture, it delivers a Japanese fine-dining experience that is both rigorous and welcoming.
