The story
Mocotó Vila Leopoldina is the second chapter of a story that began in 1973, when José de Almeida opened a small northern-style house in the working-class neighborhood of Vila Medeiros. Today, his son Rodrigo Oliveira commands the kitchen, blending the traditions of comida sertaneja — the hearty, rustic cooking of Brazil's hinterlands — with a contemporary sensibility. The original Mocotó has earned a Bib Gourmand from the Michelin Guide for its good quality, good value cooking, and was named the best restaurant in the world in the "no reservation required" category by the World Restaurant Awards in 2019. The Vila Leopoldina outpost, opened in 2023, carries that same DNA into the west zone of São Paulo.
The space is informal and inclusive, designed to welcome a wide range of palates and backgrounds. The menu bridges the familiar and the new. Classic starters like dadinhos de tapioca (crispy tapioca cubes with coalho cheese and sweet chili sauce), torresmo (pork rinds), and baião de dois (rice and beans with sausage, bacon, and dried beef) are all present. But the Vila Leopoldina kitchen also introduces creations exclusive to this house: braised ox tongue in wine sauce with pickles, fried pirarucu fish, and a "PF do Galinheiro" — a hearty plate of chicken parmigiana with fragrant rice and fried manioc. For dessert, look for the Romeu e Juliette tart — a play on the classic Brazilian pairing of guava and cheese — and the cajá-manga.
Rodrigo Oliveira's cooking is defined by a phrase he often repeats: "eyes on the world, feet firmly in the sertão." That tension between rootedness and curiosity shows in dishes like the moqueca sertaneja, a vegetable stew of cashew, banana, and pumpkin served with rice and crunchy farofa; or the carne de sol assada, salt-cured beef confited in butter with roasted garlic and biquinho peppers. The kitchen values inclusion — there are dedicated vegan options, and the bar pours a carefully chosen selection of Brazilian craft beers and cachaças from the Empório Mocotó. In a city of fine dining temples, Mocotó Vila Leopoldina stays true to its origins: generous, unpretentious, and deeply connected to the flavors of the Brazilian northeast.
