The story
At Cabaret l'Enfer on rue Saint-Denis, the dining experience is built around a tasting menu that changes almost daily. The kitchen works with what is fresh and local, drawing inspiration from the slow food movement and the art of fermentation. The result is a menu of eight to nine courses that shifts with the seasons and the market.
The space itself is designed to spark conversation and creativity. Music, art, and the joie de vivre spirit of Montréal are woven into the atmosphere, making the restaurant feel like a gathering place for people who appreciate thoughtful cooking and good company.
Chef Massimo Piedimonte was born in Montréal into an Italian immigrant family where food was always central. He has spent nineteen years in the kitchen, refining his craft under Daniel Boulud and later crossing the Atlantic to learn from René Redzepi at NOMA in Copenhagen. Returning to Montréal, he became executive chef at Le Mousso, where his team won Restaurant of the Year at Les Lauriers de la Gastronomie Québécoise in 2018 and was named one of Canada’s top ten restaurants. He himself received the One to Watch Young Chef Award from Canada’s 100 Best in 2019.
Cabaret l'Enfer, his current project, was named the number two best new restaurant in Canada in 2023 by Canada’s 100 Best. In 2026, it earned a Michelin Recommended distinction, a recognition that aligns with the restaurant’s commitment to bold, locally inspired cooking.
A sample menu might begin with burrata and accompaniments, then move through courses like lobster gnocchetti with morels and peppers, cod with pil pil and fava beans, and an entrecôte with bordelaise and white asparagus. Enhancements such as otoro with seaweed mole or lobster lardo with corn, saffron, and lavender are available. Dessert might be strawberries with spruce tips or a tiramisu-ish finish with mascarpone and kombucha. A curated wine pairing is offered, and the kitchen accommodates dietary restrictions when notified in advance.
Cabaret l'Enfer is open Tuesday through Saturday from 6 to 10 pm, with an off-menu service after 9 pm. Reservations are preferred, but walk-ins are welcome.
