The story
Auberge Saint-Mathieu sits on the edge of Lake Bellemare, a short drive from Shawinigan. The restaurant’s own words describe it as “a gourmet celebration of the terroir” – a place where the conviviality of a village meets creative, emotional cuisine. The dining room looks out over the water, especially striking at sunset, and the kitchen works exclusively through tasting menus.
Those menus are built around the products and artisans of the Mauricie region, paired with wines, cocktails, or non-alcoholic options. The restaurant’s commitment to sustainable, locally rooted cooking earned it a Michelin Green Star, and in 2026 it was also awarded Michelin Recommended status – a recognition that aligns with its quiet, sincere approach to hospitality.
In warmer months, a separate Comptoir – Buvette de village opens on the terrace, offering an à la carte menu for relaxed evenings. The property also hosts seasonal events, including a cabane à sucre in late March. For guests staying overnight, the inn offers several packages that combine lodging with five- or eight-service tasting dinners, plus breakfasts.
The experience is intimate and reservation-only. The kitchen lets the region speak through each course, and the setting – lake, forest, quiet – completes the meal. Whether you come for the Michelin-starred tasting menu or a summer evening on the terrace, Auberge Saint-Mathieu delivers a distinctly Mauricie sense of place.
