The story

aKin Toronto | Michelin-Starred Modern Asian Blind Tasting Menu

aKin

At 51 Colborne Street, aKin is a fine dining restaurant that has quickly become a defining voice in Toronto’s culinary landscape. It is the vision of chef and owner Eric Chong, the first winner of MasterChef Canada, and his mentor, three-Michelin-starred chef Alvin Leung. Together, they have created a space where modern Asian cuisine is not just served, but explored.

The restaurant’s name, meaning “of similar nature or character” or “related by blood,” reflects its philosophy. Though not related by blood, Chong and Leung have become family through their shared passion. That spirit of kinship extends to the kitchen, where tradition and innovation meet on equal terms.

aKin offers an exclusive blind tasting menu. Each season, the menu draws from a specific theme. One recent iteration celebrates the soul of Asian street food, transforming the familiar flavours of Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Japan into something refined and surprising. The result is food that feels personal and familiar, yet leaves room for discovery. The menu changes, but the approach remains constant: reimagining classic Asian flavours with contemporary techniques and meticulous care.

The dining experience is supported by a thoughtful beverage program. An in-house sommelier curates wine pairings to complement each course, while the bar offers cocktails that balance innovation with tradition. The bar itself is a sophisticated space for a pre-dinner drink or a relaxed evening of small plates and conversation.

The restaurant offers three distinct settings. The main Dining Room is an immersive space where the energy of guests and team creates the ambiance. The Chef’s Counter seats just four, placing guests inside the kitchen for an enhanced tasting menu and a front-row view of the culinary craft. A Private Dining Room, overlooking the wine display, accommodates up to eight guests with the option of a private entrance.

In less than a year after opening, aKin became the only new restaurant in Ontario to receive a Michelin star. That same year, Eric Chong was awarded the Michelin Young Chef Award 2025, a recognition of his exceptional creativity, technical mastery, and leadership. He is now one of the few chefs in Canada to operate both a Bib Gourmand restaurant and a Michelin-starred restaurant, a testament to his versatility and excellence across different levels of dining.

At aKin, every detail—from the custom plateware to the glassware and cutlery—is chosen to enhance the experience. The result is a restaurant that offers not just a meal, but a genuine culinary adventure.
