The story
At Alder, Chef Patrick Kriss draws inspiration from traditions and techniques long practiced in and around the Mediterranean – spanning Spain, France, Italy, Greece and Morocco. Whether you're gathering with friends for small plates and cocktails, or diving into a feast of prime meats and fresh seafood, the kitchen delivers with confidence.
Chef Kriss, the Toronto native behind the critically acclaimed Alo and its sister restaurants, opened Alder in 2022. It quickly became a fixture in the city's dining scene. With the dedication of Chef Kriss and his team, Alder is honored to be recognized in the Toronto Michelin Guide.
The restaurant describes itself as "a warm and comfortable place to be, like just the right distance from a bonfire." That warmth carries through the menu: a dinner lineup that moves from small plates like scallop crudo with grilled avocado and blood orange to mains such as Spanish octopus with crispy potato and romesco, or short rib with black garlic and chimichurri jus. Brunch brings its own Mediterranean energy with dishes like shakshuka with pork belly and nduja tomato sauce.
The cocktail program is equally thoughtful, with low-ABV options and a curated wine list that includes everything from Cava to Burgundy. Alder’s setting inside the Ace Hotel Toronto makes it a natural gathering spot for locals and visitors alike. It is a restaurant that feels both ambitious and relaxed, rooted in the flavours of the Mediterranean and the rhythms of the city.
