The story
Alobar Downtown occupies the first floor of the Medcan building at 150 York Street, in Toronto’s Financial District. The space is designed for both energy and intimacy: the bar and lounge invite revelry, while the dining room offers warmth. Live music, a happy hour, and a lunch prix fixe menu are part of the daily rhythm. Private event spaces and catering options make it a flexible venue for corporate celebrations, client dinners, or weddings.
The menu is crafted by Michelin-starred chef and owner Patrick Kriss, alongside chef de cuisine Matthew Gimblett. The kitchen focuses on choice seafood, grilled fish, and prime chops, all served with genuine hospitality. The cuisine is French steakhouse, with small plates and group dining menus available. A special Lobster Saturdays promotion offers a whole 1.5lb lobster in the shell for $75 each Saturday evening during summer.
A world-class wine display is a centrepiece of the dining room. The restaurant’s wine program earned a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence in 2024, reflecting a thoughtful selection that pairs with the seafood and chops. Bar manager Aidan MacCready oversees the cocktails and wine list, complementing the French steakhouse fare.
