Arbequina: A New Voice in Arabic Cuisine

On Roncesvalles Avenue in Toronto, Chef Moeen Abuzaid and his wife have created Arbequina, a restaurant that bridges the rich traditions of Arabic cuisine with modern culinary innovation. This is a labour of love, born from Chef Moeen’s journey from Amman, Jordan to New York City, where he worked alongside world-renowned chefs before bringing his vision to Canada.

The restaurant’s philosophy is rooted in sustainability and respect for ingredients. The menu evolves with the seasons, featuring almost 100% locally sourced produce. Arbequina works directly with farmers and suppliers, and cultivates its own herbs in a dedicated garden. Whole utilization of fruits, vegetables, and proteins minimizes waste, while the kitchen’s zero-proof approach means every beverage is crafted without alcohol, designed to complement the food with the same care as a wine list.

Chef Moeen is considered a pioneer of elevated Middle Eastern cuisine. His path took him from the kitchens of Amman’s finest hotels to the epicenter of New York’s food scene, where he expanded his palate and technique. A successful pop-up, “The Broken English,” preceded his move to Toronto in 2019. At Arbequina, he reimagines classic Arabic food through international techniques and local ingredients, creating dishes that tell stories of tradition and cultural heritage.

The space itself is warm and welcoming, a reflection of the neighbourhood it calls home. Each dish is intended to transport guests to a landscape rich with flavour. Arbequina’s commitment to craft and place has earned it a Michelin Recommended distinction, a recognition of its singular approach to elevated Arabic cuisine in Toronto.
