The story
In June 2024, husband-and-wife duo Jayadeep Patra and Madhusmita Patra took the reins of Bar Goa, a restaurant in Toronto’s St. Lawrence neighbourhood that had already earned a following for its modern take on Indian cuisine. Just months into their ownership, the restaurant received its first Michelin recognition in October 2024, a testament to the vision they brought to the table.
Madhusmita Patra, who also serves as chef, leads a kitchen team that includes Head Chef Sanjeev Kumar and Tandoor Chef Arjun Paudel. Together, they build on a foundation laid by the restaurant’s original creators: celebrating bold Indian flavours with an elevated, contemporary approach. The menu is described as “traditional Indian tapas,” and the dishes bear that out — think scallop katori tartlets inspired by coastal Goa, or a mushroom galouti kebab served with saffron roti and a wild mushroom chai.
The cooking is precise and playful. A la carte offerings include Prawn Balchao Toast — finely diced prawns in a spicy Goan pickle on Japanese milk bread — and a vegetarian Jackfruit Xacutti Roti, where crispy jackfruit meets xacutti sauce in a mini kulcha taco. The tandoor section features dishes like Makhani Chicken Tikka with leeks and Amul cheese, and a Legendary Lamb Chop with fenugreek mint sauce and strawberry chilli chutney.
For those who want the full picture, Bar Goa offers Omakase Tasting Menus at lunch and dinner. The evening version runs seven courses over 90 minutes, with options for both non-vegetarian and vegetarian diners. A beverage pairing is available.
The space itself is intimate and polished, with a bar that supports a well-considered cocktail and wine list. The restaurant’s own description of its philosophy — that dining should be a sensory journey — is evident in the attention to detail across every course.
Bar Goa is open Tuesday through Sunday, with both lunch and dinner service. The entrance is on Toronto Street.
