The story
Bar Isabel has earned a Michelin Recommended nod for 2026, and stepping inside makes it clear why. On Toronto’s College Street, this is a place where the kitchen puts out contemporary Spanish dishes built on local ingredients and fine European imports. The room hums with energy—counter dining, a lively bar, and a patio that opens in June. Reservations are strongly suggested.
The menu reads like a tour of Spain, from pintxos and conservas to whole grilled octopus and 45-day dry-aged ribeye. Start with the essentials: sourdough with olive oil, pan con tomate, or a plate of hand-cut Jamón Ibérico from Joselito, described as “the best Jamón in the world.” The pintxos are served per piece—anchovy gilda, jamón croqueta, sobrasada with foie gras. For seafood, there’s sea bream ceviche, shrimp al ajillo, and a whole grilled octopus that feeds a table. Meat lovers gravitate toward roast veal bone marrow, grilled beef tongue, or the 10oz picanha steak.
Vegetables get equal attention: shishito peppers, patatas bravas, grilled mushrooms with cured egg yolk, and a daily vegetable with hazelnut romesco. Finish with the Basque cake topped with hot sherry cream (a dollar from each goes to charity) or a dark chocolate and coconut ice bar.
The bar pours classic and seasonal cocktails alongside a deep Spanish wine list. House cocktails include the Isabel Fashioned (bourbon and Spanish brandy) and the Melipona with mezcal and honey. There’s a dedicated sherry program with flights, vermouths by the glass, and Spanish fizz. Beer and cider are local—Left Field IPA, Sonnen Hill lager, Revel Cider.
From noon to 4pm on Saturdays, Bar Isabel offers a prix fixe for two at $69—shishito peppers, pan con tomate, a choice of chorizo or manchego, patatas bravas, a main (mushrooms, octopus, or pork secreto), and Basque cake. Half-price cocktails round out the deal.
Bar Isabel delivers Spanish cooking with confidence and without pretence—a place that earned its Michelin star recommendation through consistent, ingredient-driven food and a bar that knows its sherry.
