The story
On a street known for its independent character, Dil Se fits right in. The name translates from Hindi as “from the heart,” and that sentiment runs through the kitchen. Opened in December 2019, this Toronto restaurant brings an authentic taste of North India to the Roncesvalles neighbourhood, a welcome addition to a street that’s already home to many unique restaurants and cafes.
Chef and owner Mani Panwar leads the kitchen. With 25 years of experience in the culinary and hospitality industries—including a stint as Head Chef at Bombay Bhel—he brings a steady hand to the stovetop. Panwar learned to cook from his mother, and his food reflects that home-style foundation. His acclaimed creation, Chicken Kamasutra, helped earn him recognition as an award-winning chef in Indian cuisine, and the restaurant itself is powered by Baba’s Hospitality Services in Ontario. Dil Se is also a Michelin Recommended spot, a nod to the quality of its Punjabi Dhaba-style cooking.
The menu is built around North Indian classics with careful spicing. Guests can order familiar favourites like Butter Chicken or Chicken Tikka Masala, or explore chef specials such as Chicken Lababdar, a Mughlai-style dish cooked with onions, tomatoes, and cashew sauce. The Tandoori section features Galouti Kebab, minced lamb with authentic spices served with a rogan josh sauce. Vegetarians have plenty of options, including Makhmali Paneer and Kadhai Paneer. The kitchen uses seasonal herbs and rich spices, and the mint sauce has drawn praise for tasting just like homemade.
Whether dining in for the warm Punjabi-style ambiance or ordering takeout, guests consistently note the generous service and quality of the food. As one regular put it: everything about this place is "authentic and genuine." Dil Se delivers Indian cuisine from the heart, without pretense.
