The story
On Spadina Avenue, in the heart of Toronto's Chinatown, Mother's Dumplings serves the hand-folded parcels that gave the restaurant its name. The story begins in 2005, when Zhen and Richard opened a tiny basement location on Huron Street, using recipes passed down from Zhen's mother. Those recipes, rooted in the cooking of Northeastern China, are still the backbone of the menu today.
The restaurant has grown over the years, moving to its current Spadina Avenue location, but the approach hasn't changed. They use premium meat and vegetables and take pride in keeping things natural — no MSG, food colouring, or chemical enhancers. The result is a style of Chinese cooking that feels both homey and precise.
The menu centres on dumplings, available fresh or frozen to take home. Fillings include pork and cabbage, pork and chives, chicken and mushroom, and a vegan option of mushroom, tofu, and cabbage. The frozen dumplings have also found their way into select Toronto grocery stores, including Summerhill Markets, Fiesta Farms, and Sobeys.
The restaurant's consistency and quality have earned it a loyal following over nearly two decades. Toronto Life, the Toronto Star, and NOW Magazine have all named it one of the best Chinese restaurants in the city. In 2026, the Michelin Guide added its recognition, listing Mother's Dumplings as a Recommended spot — a nod to the kind of cooking that doesn't need to shout to be noticed.
