The story
Bao Bei is a restaurant in Vancouver’s Chinatown that cultivates casual intimate dining experiences. The name means "precious" in Chinese, a fitting description for a place that feels like a discovery. The concept is built around small plates meant to be shared amongst a group of friends and family.
The kitchen draws influences from Taiwan and China, but also takes inspiration from a range of global flavours to create a more modern approach to Chinese cooking. The menu is designed for sharing, encouraging a relaxed, convivial atmosphere where conversation flows as freely as the food.
Bao Bei’s approach has earned it a Michelin Recommended distinction, a recognition that speaks to the quality and consistency of its cooking. The restaurant is also known for its thoughtful drink program, with a bar that welcomes walk-ins.
The space itself is intimate, with a few tables in the dining room, high-tops, and a bar. For larger parties of six to ten, there is a family table where a Family Feast is served. The restaurant is vegetarian and vegan friendly, with many dishes easily adjusted to be meat-free. They also proudly use MSG, noting it is a natural part of the flavour profile of many Chinese condiments.
Bao Bei is open for dinner nightly, with later hours on Friday and Saturday. The kitchen’s last call is half an hour before closing.
