The story
Since 1995, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Thanh—the legendary lunch lady herself—has been serving rotating daily noodle soups to locals and travellers in Saigon. Now, her Vancouver outpost on Commercial Drive brings that same spirit to the Pacific Northwest, earning a Michelin Bib Gourmand for its good quality, good value cooking.
The menu is a collaboration between Mrs. Thanh’s mastery of Vietnamese flavours and Chef Benedict Lim. It is rooted in heritage but driven by innovation, marrying the best local ingredients of the region with the bold, authentic tastes of Vietnam. The result is a modern yet approachable take on Vietnamese street food that has drawn praise from critics and diners alike.
Standouts from the press include the banh canh cua and the pork salad roll, both described as unlike anything else in the city. The rotating daily soups remain a cornerstone of the experience, offering a taste of the variety that made the original Saigon spot world-famous. Anthony Bourdain once said of Mrs. Thanh’s soups: “It’s like discovering new neighbourhoods every few mouthfuls.”
The dining room is designed for both lunch and dinner, with an enclosed heated patio available for evening service. The drink list is equally thoughtful, featuring cocktails like the Phở-Spiced Old Fashioned and the Cà Phê Negroni, alongside a solid selection of local BC wines and beers. Non-alcoholic options include pandan coconut tea and the classic Vietnamese egg coffee, cà phê trứng.
Lunch Lady is a place where culinary excellence meets genuine hospitality, offering a distinctly authentic Vietnamese dining experience that has earned its place on the global stage.
