The story
Takuya Matsuda’s Vancouver outpost of Okeya Kyujiro brings a singular vision of Japanese cuisine to Mainland Street. Originally from Mie Prefecture, Matsuda spent over 25 years mastering his craft, drawing on early experiences in the fashion industry and as a graphic designer to develop a refined aesthetic that extends from plating to the entire dining space.
While deeply rooted in the traditions of Japanese cuisine, Matsuda is a relentless innovator. He regularly travels to markets across Japan to personally select seasonal fish and ingredients, and has visited more than 50 sake breweries to perfect the harmony between food and drink. This dedication to quality and detail was recognized when the Vancouver location earned a Michelin star within a year of opening, a testament to the high level of cooking on offer.
Matsuda’s cuisine is defined by what he calls “Theatrical Omakase.” Inspired by Cirque du Soleil, the experience engages all five senses—taste, sight, sound, and emotion—turning dinner into a live performance. The dinner menu features over 25 courses, while a shorter lunch omakase offers more than 15 courses. An occasional Ochakase experience pairs sweets and savory dishes with five premium Japanese teas.
Each visit to Okeya Kyujiro is designed to reveal new surprises, expressed through dishes that tell a story. It is a place where tradition and innovation meet, creating a dining experience that is both deeply personal and internationally acclaimed.
