The story
Since opening in 2015, The Mackenzie Room has been a fixture in Vancouver’s Railtown neighbourhood. The space is described as “rustic meets refined” — a casual fine dining room where exposed brick and warm lighting create an atmosphere that feels both industrial and intimate. As one critic put it, “It’s funky, it’s buzzy, and all the cool kids are talking about it.” The kitchen is steered by Executive Chef Sean Reeve, whose approach is rooted in technique and a deep respect for the Pacific Northwest’s seasonal bounty.
Chef Sean Reeve’s path to Vancouver began in a dish pit at a local BBQ joint, then led him through Toronto’s George Brown Culinary School and across Europe — to Michelin-starred kitchens in Italy, Spain, and France. His time abroad shaped a philosophy of relentless focus on flavour development and letting local ingredients speak for themselves. This dedication has earned The Mackenzie Room four consecutive Michelin Guide awards from 2022 to 2025, a recognition that speaks to the consistency of his vision.
The menu is never static. Chef Reeve and Sous Chef Emil Bernard build tasting menus around a rotating cast of dishes: six smaller plates that explore raw preparations like crudo, ceviche, and tartare, alongside vegetable-driven creations; four larger plates moving through fish, seafood, poultry, and meat; and a couple of desserts to finish. The exact lineup depends on what’s in season and what ideas the chefs are chasing. Guests can choose from several tasting formats — from a five-course solo experience to a twelve-dish, family-style feast for four. A limited a la carte menu is also available nightly.
The Mackenzie Room describes itself as a “hidden gem,” and the Michelin Guide echoes that sentiment, noting its “laid-back vibe, a strong urban look and a blackboard menu listing dishes that focus on local, seasonal ingredients.” The room’s warmth extends beyond the decor: the kitchen’s genuine love of hospitality is evident in every course. Diners are encouraged to hand over the reins and let the chef guide the evening — a gesture that rewards curiosity with a meal that feels both personal and deeply connected to the region.
