The story
Since 2017, Yuwa has been an elegant presence on Vancouver’s West Side, offering a creative homage to regional Japanese fare. The restaurant is led by Chef and Co-Owner Masahiro Omori and renowned Sake Sommelier and Co-Owner Iori Kataoka. Their collaboration brings together Omori’s classical training and Kataoka’s expert curation of artisan sake and wine, resulting in a dining experience that has earned a ‘Recommended’ designation from the MICHELIN guide and recognition as one of Vancouver’s Best Japanese Restaurants.
Chef Omori’s path began with his grandmother, Yuwa, a fresh fish trader in Japan’s Chiba Prefecture who instilled in him a dedication to craft and an eye for the freshest catch. After culinary school in Japan and two decades of experience in restaurants in both Japan and Vancouver, Omori now showcases his effortless-yet-elegant approach to the traditional Japanese kaiseki style of dining. He takes pride in escorting guests through Japan’s distinct regional cuisines using the bounty of local and seasonal ingredients from the Pacific Northwest. MICHELIN has spotlighted his “masterful presentation” that will be “etched in your memory forever”.
Co-Owner Iori Kataoka, a Certified Advanced Sake Professional and a respected veteran of the Vancouver hospitality scene, curates one of the city’s top selections of artisan sake and wine. Her expertise has earned Yuwa consecutive gold awards at the Vancouver International Wine Festival’s Wine Program Excellence Awards and the Best Food and Wine Pairing designation. The restaurant’s menu is ever-changing, reflecting a premium on the freshest products available. While the Kaiseki Course is now offered as a seasonal event series on select dates, the regular menu offers an inspired approach to Japanese cuisine.
Dine-in is available in the dining room or on the heated outdoor patio during summer. Take-out is also offered. Yuwa’s recognition as a MICHELIN Recommended restaurant underscores its commitment to a Zen culinary experience that pairs consummate service with an exceptional selection of fine wine and sake from around the world.
