The story

Bugenvila in Cavtat: Michelin-Recommended Mediterranean Dining in Croatia

Bugenvila in Cavtat

On the Dalmatian coast, in a lush garden scented with jasmine and bougainvillea, Bugenvila offers a refined taste of the Mediterranean. This Cavtat restaurant, recognized in the Michelin guide, is the work of chef Eduardo de Ornelas, who presents a signature menu that draws from the land and sea.

The setting is a manicured outdoor space, an escape where the fragrance of flowers mingles with the salty air. The a la carte dinner menu reads like a tour of the region. Start with Kumparička goat cheese from Istria, served with homemade sourdough, or a selection of local smoked charcuterie. From the sea, there are shucked local oysters and a ceviche of the day, briefly cooked in lemon juice.

Mains continue the Mediterranean theme. The kitchen prepares grilled Adriatic bluefin tuna loin, octopus cooked under a bell, and a black risotto with cuttlefish tentacles. For those who prefer land, there is crispy suckling pig with quince jam and parmesan polenta, or ox cheeks braised in red wine. The wine list is a deep dive into Croatian and Dalmatian varieties, with pages dedicated to indigenous grapes like Pošip and Grk from the island of Korčula, and the robust Plavac Mali.

Bugenvila is a place for unhurried meals, where the food and garden create a sense of place. It is a destination for anyone seeking a genuine taste of the Croatian coast, recognized by Michelin for its quality.

The restaurant in the middle of Cavtat’s waterfront has for years been a reliable address for seafood lovers who come here for fresh oysters from nearby Mali Ston, perfectly grilled fish and fine risottos. But since chefs of Latin American origin have taken over the kitchen, their positive influence on the treatment of fresh, seasonal local ingredients has become noticeable. Oysters remain indispensable on the menu, but now come with the addition of ceviche. From tomatoes they make a modern Mediterranean refreshing gazpacho and combine it with beetroot juice. Whether fish or meat is on the menu, everything has a slight twist in preparation and presentation, and the piquant, exotic spices and Latin flavours are in good harmony with the region and its produce from the sea and Dubrovnik’s hinterland. The service at Bugenvila is praiseworthy. The staff are well informed about the dishes and wines, professional yet relaxed, and the varied choice of selected wines from all Croatian regions, plus an excellent selection of foreign labels, especially champagne, convincingly complement the modern Mediterranean cuisine. Bugenvila is a very pleasant place; its street terrace is surrounded by greenery and provides privacy in the busiest part of town, while the modern upper dining area on the first floor further enhances the feeling of comfort, especially during summer heat. The price-to-quality ratio is fully in balance.
