The story
Tucked behind the Church of St. Blaise and facing the Rector's Palace, Bistro Tavulin brings a personal touch to Dubrovnik's dining scene. This family restaurant is rooted in the old city's stone streets, offering a setting that feels both historic and intimate, with outdoor seating for warm Adriatic evenings.
The kitchen is led by chef Tomislav Matić, a Dubrovnik native who started cooking at seventeen. He trained under Michelin-starred chefs and, crucially, learned from his grandfather, Tomislav Korljan, once considered the greatest chef in the former Yugoslavia. That lineage is evident in the cooking: classic Croatian dishes with subtle modern touches and a Mediterranean edge.
The menu is built around local ingredients, seasonal produce, and authentic flavours that capture the essence of Dalmatian tradition. This is classic cuisine, straightforward and honest, complemented by an excellent selection of well-known Croatian wines. The restaurant's commitment to quality and consistency has earned it a Michelin Recommended award, a recognition that speaks to the refined yet unpretentious experience.
Bistro Tavulin describes its approach as "innovation on a plate," but the innovation is subtle—a modern twist on a grandmother's recipe, a fresh take on a coastal staple. It's a place where the past and present meet over a shared table, and where the flavours of the region are treated with respect. Whether you're stopping for breakfast or a full dinner, the focus remains on what's local, seasonal, and true.
