The story
Tucked away on a narrow street just off the main Stradun, Marco Polo is a small family restaurant that has been part of Dubrovnik Old Town since the 1980s. Its peaceful courtyard terrace offers a quiet escape from the city crowds, shaded by the old city walls. The restaurant’s name honors the famous explorer believed to have been born on the nearby island of Korčula. Its consistent focus on original, high-quality food has earned it a Michelin Recommended distinction.
The kitchen’s philosophy is straightforward: start with rustic recipes and fresh local ingredients, then add a modern interpretation. The à la carte menu guides diners through styles from fresh and marinated to slow-cooked and grilled. Traditional Dalmatian food is a strong foundation—expect dishes like fresh seashells in a traditional white or red sauce, or a black risotto made with Adriatic cuttlefish ink.
Signature dishes draw inspiration from Marco Polo’s travels along the Silk Road. The “Precious Blue” tuna steak, a bestseller, is seared in a crispy sesame crust and finished with extra virgin olive oil from Korčula. For meat lovers, the Kublai Khan beefsteak in a velvety leek sauce is a standout, named for the emperor Marco Polo served for 17 years. The restaurant is also noted by guests as having some of the best meat dishes in the Old Town.
The wine list is exclusively Croatian, featuring over 25 selections from two major wine regions: the continental area (with Riesling, Gewurztraminer, and Chardonnay) and the coastal region, known for Plavac Mali grapes from Pelješac, including wines from the famous Dingač and Postup vineyards. The restaurant’s sommelier expertise ensures each glass is well-matched to the meal, making for a memorable exploration of Croatia’s wine heritage.
With its intimate ambiance, professional team, and focus on authentic Mediterranean cuisine, Marco Polo is a reliable choice for both a quiet dinner and private group events in Dubrovnik.
