The story
Forty kilometres north of Zagreb, on one of the loveliest hills in the Zagorje region, Vuglec Breg is a family-run estate that brings together a restaurant, winery, and accommodation. The setting is pure rural Croatia: rolling vineyards, old wooden buildings, and a view that stretches across the green slopes. Here, the kitchen celebrates the flavours of the region with a respect for tradition that has earned it a Michelin Bib Gourmand award every year since 2018.
The main dining room seats 80 guests, with a smaller salon for 26 and a covered wooden terrace for 50, heated for year-round comfort. The atmosphere is warm and unpretentious, with an open kitchen that lets you watch the cooks at work. For a more intimate experience, the Sjenica “Pri baki Rozi” is a separate grill house with a bread oven and a summer terrace. It can host 40 inside and 34 on the terrace, set among the first rows of vines and a cherry tree. Here, dishes are prepared in the traditional bread oven – think zagorski štrukli (cheese-filled pastry), tender veal, duck, turkey with mlinci (baked dough strips), and homemade bread. The Piknik bar, on a sunny meadow with loungers, offers sparkling wine, cocktails, and ice cream for a relaxed afternoon.
The menu is built on recipes passed down through generations, using fresh ingredients from local family farms. Every dish reflects the classic cuisine of Zagorje, from slow-cooked meats to seasonal vegetables. The restaurant’s own Vuglec winery provides the wines – still and sparkling – that pair naturally with the food. The Bib Gourmand recognition underlines the consistent quality and value of this cooking, where honest, flavourful food is served without fuss. Whether you come for a family lunch, a business meeting, or a celebration, Vuglec Breg offers a genuine taste of Croatian hospitality, rooted in the land and its traditions.
