The story
Rivica defines Kvarner cuisine on Ribarska obala in Njivice, where the Lesica family has practiced hospitality since 1934. Nonna Mare and nonno Ivan opened the property to receive guests from the former Austro-Hungarian monarchy, creating a baseline of quality that owner and director Dražen Lesica maintains today. Chef Igor Eržen guides the kitchen with a focus on ingredients sourced directly from local fishermen. The menu channels the Mediterranean cooking traditions of Krk and the Kvarner region, infused with an air of the area's Venetian heritage. Seasonal shifts dictate the plates, ensuring the food stays aligned with the daily availability of the sea and land.
Guests frequently choose their main course by inspecting the common and spiny lobsters held in an aquarium at the entrance. Starters highlight the chef's selection of fresh seafood carpaccio, featuring crisp slices of raw fish and shellfish prepared with care. The winter menu introduces broskva, a distinctive dessert built around Kvarner collard greens, dried figs, candied almonds, and panna cotta. Throughout the year, the kitchen celebrates local staples during highly anticipated events like the Days of Cod and Squid Days. The gallery displays other preparations including stuffed turbot file, lamb shank cooked sous vide, and spaghetti with scampi. These dishes reflect a commitment to Croatian seafood excellence while preserving the unique taste profile of Krk.
The restaurant remains in the exact location along the main promenade where it began operations more than ninety years ago. A shaded terrace provides seating with a clear view of the small port, the harbour, and the waters of Kvarner Bay. This outdoor space links the current dining room to the original visitors who arrived seeking the exotic climate and untouched nature of the island. Rivica operates throughout the year, serving both locals and international travelers who travel specifically for the food. Visitors arriving by vessel can moor directly at the quay on Ribarska obala before entering. The wine list offers carefully selected local and international labels at accessible prices, pairing naturally with the menu.
