The story
In the small village of Buščina, between Umag and Plovanija and away from the city bustle, Konoba Buščina has been living its Istrian dream for over three decades. This is a family business, born from passion and dedication, where the warmth comes from the fact that the konoba is also the family’s home. The atmosphere is unpretentious and welcoming, with a fireplace for cool evenings and a children’s playground for the youngest guests.
The kitchen’s philosophy is simple: achieve perfect harmony with nature by using only seasonal, local ingredients at their peak. The menu changes throughout the year, always offering something new. Dishes are prepared with minimal processing to preserve the original qualities of the ingredients. The focus is on excellent local staples and traditional preparation – nothing extravagant, but the freshness and quality are what surprise.
The restaurant naturally highlights the treasures of the Adriatic and the Istrian hinterland. From the sea, there are scallops (capesante) from Novigrad, prized for the mix of salt and fresh water, and scampi from the Kvarner Bay, once praised by poet Gabriele D’Annunzio. From the land, the menu features boškarin, a typical Istrian cattle whose meat has become a culinary delicacy, alongside Istrian pršut (prosciutto), truffles from the Mirna river valley, and seasonal asparagus and wild greens.
The team’s commitment to authentic, high-quality Istrian cuisine has earned them a place among the top restaurants in the region. They have been named a Top 5 konoba in Istria for five consecutive years and have received the Zlatna plaketa za kvalitetu and the IQ oznaka for top hospitality. In 2022, they were recognized among the Top 100 best restaurants in Croatia by Restaurant Guru, and in 2023, among the Top 100 best steaks restaurants in Croatia. The restaurant is also included in the “Tartufo vero” group and participates in local gastronomic events like “Dani švoja” and “Dani istarskih šparoga.” Their consistent dedication to Mediterranean cuisine and local traditions has also earned them a Michelin Recommended award for 2026.
