The story

Pod Zidom Bistro – Michelin-Recommended Farm-to-Table Dining in Zagreb

Pod Zidom Bistro sits in a quiet historic street just steps from Zagreb’s main square, yet feels worlds away from the urban rush. The bistro has been recommended by the Michelin Guide since 2019 – a recognition that reflects its unwavering commitment to fresh ingredients and local wines.

The interior balances the charm of its old-town location with a modern, relaxed energy. The real draw, however, is the spacious open terrace overlooking the Zagreb Cathedral, where the city’s rhythm unfolds at a pleasant distance.

The kitchen works with what is best at the Dolac market each morning. That farm-to-table approach shapes a menu that changes with the seasons, built on high-quality produce from small local producers. Signature dishes include beef tartare with smoked bone marrow and kimchi, slow-cooked lamb gnocchi with pumpkin seed pesto, and an open lasagna with duck ragout and black trumpets. Every plate shows respect for the ingredient – precise, unfussy, and confident.

Wine is a passion here. The list explores Croatian and regional terroirs, with a strong focus on natural wines and boutique producers. Pod Zidom even collaborates with winemakers to create house-label bottles, including a brut and a pet-nat.

The team shares a common goal: to educate and spread appreciation for top-quality food and wine. That dedication turns each meal into something worth remembering – a genuine taste of Zagreb, rooted in its market, its street, and its skyline.

Bistro Pod Zidom is located on the street of the same name in Zagreb, in the very centre of the city, right next to Dolac, the main market. So they always offer several dishes made from seasonal ingredients. We were greeted kindly despite the lack of a reservation, but they managed to seat us at the only available table. On weekends, the restaurant is usually full, so it is better to book a table in advance. The personnel were very pleasant and professional, ready to answer to the questions in English for our foreign friends. The simple interior design also contributes to making you feel relaxed, and there is also an outdoor terrace with a green fence for warmer days. The way the menu is written is a bit confusing because everything is listed together, from drinks to seasonal dishes and other dishes, and then again wines, first by the glass, and then bottled. We started with champagne, and before the dishes arrived, they served us fresh sourdough bread with butter made of cracklings and wild onion kajmak. Then we had the chestnut and mushroom cream soup, which we would definitely recommend, the apple and kohlrabi salad, the agnolotti pasta, like small ravioli, with pear and hazelnuts. The slow-cooked lamb with parmesan gnocchi and parmesan mousse, and the tender beef cheeks with dumplings filled with kajmak were especially delicious. The combination of innovation and tradition was also visible in the dessert: a version of schneenokle (ile flottante) with baked egg whites and crispy biscuits. Pod Zidom is a good example of bistronomy in which the execution, presentation and quality of the dishes are at a higher level, and therefore the price is higher than usual.
