The story

Amalie Copenhagen – Classic Danish Lunch Restaurant with Michelin Recommendation

Amalie – A Copenhagen Lunch Tradition

In the heart of Copenhagen, on Amaliegade, you will find Restaurant Amalie, a traditional Danish lunch restaurant that has been serving classic smørrebrød and other Danish lunch delicacies since 1986. The restaurant occupies a historic cellar dating back to 1745, originally a cooper's workshop and later a ship chandler, now transformed into a welcoming space where guests can relax and enjoy a proper Danish lunch.

The philosophy at Amalie is simple: never compromise on quality. Only the best ingredients make it into the kitchen, selected in close collaboration with long-standing, trusted suppliers. The goal is to create a house full of personality and soul, where guests feel at home and receive professional, personal service. This commitment to quality and atmosphere has not gone unnoticed – Amalie holds a Michelin recommendation, a testament to its consistent standard.

The menu is a celebration of Danish lunch classics. You will find all the well-known dishes: Amalie's own snapsemad, Christian's Ø herring, freshly chopped beef tartare, roast beef with a fried egg, and pork tenderloin steak with soft onions and pickles. For a lighter finish, there is French Brie de Meaux or a simple pancake with vanilla ice cream. All the smørrebrød is homemade and of the highest quality.

A Danish lunch is not complete without a good snaps, and Amalie takes its aquavit seriously. The restaurant offers an extensive snaps menu, including its own house-infused varieties: Amalie's Kryddersnaps with star anise, liquorice root, heather blossom, orange peel, cardamom, and cloves; a horseradish snaps with apple and lemon; and a rye bread snaps with a distinct malt flavour. They also feature snaps from Fur Bryghus and Thylandia, alongside a carefully curated beer list with brews from Fur Bryghus and other speciality beers.
