The story

Brasserie Barner – French-inspired cooking with a twist in Copenhagen

A French heart on Århusgade

Brasserie Barner sits at Århusgade 1 in Copenhagen, where chef Allan Bærentzen — previously head chef at Sokkelund — has made the kitchen his own. His cooking is rooted in the French tradition, but applied with a distinct personal twist that sets the tone for everything on the plate.

The food and the feel

Guests are welcomed with sourdough flûte and butter, warm smiles and an atmosphere that earns its brasserie name honestly. The menu leans on sharing plates alongside individual mains, and the French influence runs through dishes like halibut with artichoke, parsley and mussel sauce, and sweetbreads alongside morels, mushrooms and a slice of fried cabbage. Squid with cigaretta pepper, chilli and garlic rounds out a menu where seasoning and flavour ideas show real confidence.

The wine list is concise on by-the-glass options — a 2018 Sancerre sauvignon blanc from Claude Riffault being one example — keeping the focus tight rather than overwhelming.

Recognition and room to grow

White Guide 2026 recognises Barner at Fine level, noting Bærentzen's evident love of French cuisine and the kitchen's strong instincts for flavour. The review highlights the genuine hygge of the room and the friendly, attentive service as real strengths. It also points, candidly, to portion sizes that don't always match their price point — something the restaurant will want to address as it finds its stride.

What's already here is a clear culinary identity, a chef who knows how to season and compose, and a room that makes guests feel at ease. The foundation is solid.

At Århusgade 1, Allan Bærentzen, formerly head chef at Sokkelund, is now behind the stove, showcasing his love for French cuisine with a significant twist. We share some of the more expensive dishes (130–165 DKK) and then each order a portion of brioche. A lovely sourdough baguette and butter, water, and sweet smiling eyes (the rest is hidden behind the mask) are the first things we’re served. The wine list features few glass options, so we choose a glass of 2018 Sauvignon Blanc "Les Chasseignes" from Claude Riffault in Sancerre for 115 DKK. Good wine, sparingly poured. Portion size is an issue. The dishes, which the menu describes as “suitable for sharing,” are certainly not on the generous side. The octopus with cigarette pepper, chili, and garlic consists of just two, albeit well-spiced, rings. The halibut with artichoke, parsley, and mussel sauce is a nice little bite, but difficult to share. We count ourselves lucky that we ordered a full serving of brioche each. Yet a serving priced at 165 DKK featuring three diminutive pieces of brioche, a quarter of a morel, a decent handful of mushrooms, and a slice of fried cabbage hardly looks like a dish you’d expect for that price. The atmosphere is cozy, and there’s promise in both the concepts and the flavors, but improvements are needed regarding portion sizes relative to prices, which places the restaurant in the upper tier, offering plenty of coziness and friendly service.
