The story

Gaarden & Gaden – Wine Bar & Restaurant on Nørrebrogade, Copenhagen

Your Local on Nørrebrogade

Gaarden & Gaden sits on one of Copenhagen's most alive stretches of pavement, Nørrebrogade 88, with outdoor seating that looks directly onto Assistens Kirkegård. Regulars come for the wide pavement table, a good coffee or a cold draught, and the easy rhythm of a place that feels genuinely neighbourhood rather than destination-driven. The White Guide awarded it Fine level recognition for exactly that quality — an honest local that punches above its weight.

What's on the Table

The evening offer is built around shareable à la carte plates that change regularly, alongside a daily set menu. The kitchen leans on snacks and small dishes — oysters, quality anchovies straight from the tin, steak tartare — and keeps a solid vegetarian thread running through the card. Where the sourcing matters, it shows: the team knows many of its suppliers personally and visits them regularly, with sustainability and uncompromising quality as the stated filters.

The White Guide's reviewer singled out potato croquettes filled with Vesterhav cheese and lovage as the evening's standout — precise in texture and flavour — alongside braisiated tomatoes with fennel and parmesan, and a stracciatella with wild garlic oil and pickled gooseberries that balanced fat, acidity and the creamy garlic note of the ramsons with real confidence.

The Cellar and the Glass

Drinks are taken seriously here. The cellar holds at least 500 different labels, with natural wine at the centre and a commitment to always having a broad selection open by the glass — with more opened on request. Locally tapped, freshly humped lager shares the bar with sour beers by the bottle, and the draught selection rotates. Classic cocktails round things out. It is the kind of list that rewards curiosity without demanding expertise.

The Room and the Feel

There is a private dining room for up to twenty guests, suited to dinners, small receptions or presentations — right in the heart of Nørrebro. But the spirit of Gaarden & Gaden is most itself on that wide pavement, or inside on an evening when the à la carte is firing and the right glass of orange wine is in hand.

White Guide — Fine level

The setting is perfect for anyone who enjoys vibrant city life on the wide sidewalk terrace, where regulars savor good coffee, beer, and views of Assistens Cemetery. It’s a spot where you can relax with a carefully curated selection of natural wines, oysters, premium canned anchovies, and tartare. A daily menu is available for 285 DKK, which tonight begins with several excellent sharing plates. To start, there’s stracciatella cheese served with wild garlic oil and pickled gooseberries. It hits the mark perfectly in richness, acidity, and the creamy garlic flavor from the wild garlic, bringing balance and freshness to the dish. It pairs beautifully with the apple-like acidity and body of the orange wine in your glass—a Metamorphika Chenin Blanc from Costador in Catalonia. The braised tomatoes with fennel, rustic chunks of Parmesan, and a refreshing drizzle of olive oil are delightful, but the standout dish of the evening is undoubtedly the potato croquettes stuffed with Westphalian cheese and finished with lovage, achieving near-perfect texture and flavor. However, the final two dishes lack full sensory balance. The acidity overwhelms the endive salad with preserved lemon and homemade lamb bacon, which is too mild to provide adequate contrast. The eight-legged octopus has a pleasant texture and complements the boiled potatoes well, but its creamy butter-lemon sauce is overly sharp and lacks depth. The atmosphere is lovely, though, and if you select a few successful à la carte dishes alongside a couple of well-chosen glasses, this place delivers consistently high-quality dining.
