The story
In the quiet Ullanlinna district of Helsinki, on Neitsytpolku street, Aoi makes a confident statement about what modern cuisine can be. The restaurant describes its food as “considered and carefree” – a phrase that captures both the precision and the joy in every plate. The menu is short and changes frequently, built around classic flavour combinations served in a way that is interesting and delightful to eat.
Aoi’s approach is rooted in the personal and professional backgrounds of the team, who see the food as a joyful expression of their influences. The result is a four-course menu (€55) that shifts with the seasons and the market. Recent dishes include sea bass kinilaw with pink grapefruit, kiwi, and coconut; braised leek with crispy blue mussels; and duck leg with green beans, bacon, and bordelaise sauce, or a burbot alternative with gai lan, salted lemon, and roasted red pepper sauce. Dessert might be an apple sorbet with white chocolate-whiskey ganache and date. There are also snacks and extras, such as a Carelian pie croquette with N25 Umai caviar, white-tailed deer “cottage pie”, and a pancake with cinnamon ice cream and malt.
The setting is unfussy and welcoming, with air conditioning for comfort. Aoi’s cooking has earned a Michelin Recommended award, a recognition that underscores the restaurant’s ability to balance thoughtful technique with a relaxed, approachable spirit. The dining room is open Thursday to Saturday from 17:00 to 00:00, and Sunday from 14:00 to 21:00. Aoi offers a vegetarian menu by pre-request, ensuring that the modern cuisine remains inclusive.
There is no grand origin story here – just a clear, honest focus on making food that is both considered and carefree, in a neighbourhood that feels removed from the city’s bustle. It is a restaurant that lets the cooking speak for itself.
