Since 2016, Shelter has occupied a historic warehouse building in Helsinki’s Kanavaranta, a stone’s throw from the water. The name is fitting: the restaurant calls itself a “turvapaikka meren äärellä” – a safe haven by the sea. Here, the team believes in craftsmanship, strong collaboration, and genuine, attentive service. The atmosphere is warm and unpretentious, a place where the sea breeze and the hum of the kitchen meet.

Food That Speaks of the Season

Shelter’s kitchen is driven by seasonal flavours, with a constant aim to bring something new to each plate. Over the years, certain dishes have become beloved classics: the breads, often called the best in the city, the praised tartare, grilled dishes that capture the essence of fire, and desserts that melt on the tongue. Everything is made with heart and passion. The cuisine is firmly rooted in Finnish traditions, but presented with a modern sensibility – this is modern Finnish cuisine at its most honest.

The restaurant’s recognition in the Michelin Guide for 2026 comes as no surprise. The guide notes that both the tasting menu and the Shelter menu are “truly delicious and well-constructed.” Guests regularly echo that sentiment, with reviews calling the food, atmosphere, and service excellent, and one TripAdvisor visitor declaring it “the best dinner experience we had whilst in Helsinki.”

Drink with Character

Shelter’s drinks list mirrors the kitchen’s philosophy. The wine selection is largely self-imported, chosen from modern producers who share the restaurant’s values. Rotating craft beers and a comprehensive non-alcoholic menu ensure there is something for every mood. The focus is on personality and craftsmanship, not just labels.

Upstairs, Shelter regularly hosts photography exhibitions – at the time of writing, a series by Jaana Rinne captures Helsinki’s hidden beauty in fleeting moments of light and colour.
