The story
At the foot of the Pyrenees, in the small town of Argelès-Gazost, the restaurant Des Petits Pois Sont Rouges occupies the ground floor of the Logis Hôtel Le Miramont. The name itself is a memory: the former villa, called Peyro-Bibes, was known to Madame Pucheu as “the house of ducks and goldfish.” Today, that same spirit of playful warmth lives on in a dining room that pairs Art Deco lines with Italian-designed transparent chairs and a long red velvet sofa. A long communal table seats up to ten, making it a natural setting for business lunches or family gatherings.
Chef Pierre Pucheu leads the kitchen with a clear philosophy: respect the product, then be creative. His French modern cuisine changes with the seasons, just as the surrounding mountains change their colours. He enjoys working with forgotten cuts of meat and heirloom vegetables, pairing the taste of the terroir with the refinement of a contemporary technique. The menu is written on a slate and updated daily, so each visit brings new surprises.
The restaurant is proud of its traceability. Trout comes from a fish farm in nearby Lau-Balagnas; black pork is sourced from a charcuterie workshop just three kilometres away. Fish arrives from the coasts of Saint-Jean-de-Luz and Saint-Sébastien. This commitment to local, transparent sourcing is at the heart of the cooking.
In fine weather, the wooden terrace offers a shaded spot at the edge of the garden, ideal for a lunch in the mountain air. Inside, the dining room is bathed in light, with a calm, contemporary atmosphere. A separate children’s menu means younger guests are not forgotten.
The restaurant’s consistent quality and distinctive identity have earned it a place in the Michelin guide, a recommendation that reflects both the skill of the kitchen and the genuine hospitality of the Pucheu family. For anyone seeking modern French cuisine with a strong sense of place, Des Petits Pois Sont Rouges is a destination in itself.
