The story

Mesa Bistro Dining in Arles | Award-Winning Local Kitchen

The Open Kitchen and Its Chef

Mesa brings a grounded bistro spirit to Arles through an open kitchen designed for transparency. Recognized by Le Fooding for its consistent execution, the spot welcomes guests to watch Chef Raphaël Garnier direct the pass after training at Le Pinceau. His appointment came through a personal invitation from Claire and Julien Drouot. Their selection reflects a clear vision for everyday excellence rather than seasonal spectacle.

Plates Built for Flavor

The kitchen favors bright pairings and careful technique over heavy presentation. Fresh artichokes rest in a lemon and ginger vinaigrette next to a savory anchovy crumble. Fennel seed marinades anchor a grilled pork loin that remains tender, served alongside a sharp chickpea purée and chard stuffed with rice and legumes. A toasted brioche finished with hazelnut ice cream and praline ginger concludes the meal.

A Communal Dining Room

Long wooden tables encourage diners to share space and conversation across the main hall. A hand painted spotted mural adds visual rhythm above classic bistro seating and simple surfaces. The adjacent terrace extends the dining area toward the quiet street. This layout supports a relaxed approach to bistro-style cooking while keeping the pace brisk and focused.

On Rue des Porcelets, cheeky plates get scarfed down while seated around the mesa ! Take your pick of the terrace or the long dining room (a spotted mural, bistro furniture), the latter comes with views of the spectacular kitchen housing the promising chef Raphaël Garnier (ex-Le Pinceau), chosen by none other than Claire and Julien Drouot – the duo behind Maison Drouot . On the menu the other day at lunch: lovely artichokes cleverly dressed in a lemon-ginger vinaigrette and an anchovy crumble; libidinous pork loin marinated with fennel seeds and then grilled (but still nice and tender), paired with an electrifying and vinegary chickpea purée, plus chard stuffed with chickpeas and rice, all bathed in a full-bodied jus ; and for the heartening finale, a plump brioche French toast tucked up against a scoop of hazelnut ice cream and a praline-ginger condiment, to get you in the mood for a mid-afternoon siesta. // Raoul Taburin
