The story

Aimé Restaurant Avignon: French Bistro Meets Japanese Sensibility

The kitchen and its influences

Aimé brings a quiet blend of French bistro cooking and Japanese sensibility to Avignon. Chef Ryo Kirikura shapes every plate around seasonal produce and house-made techniques. His background across Parisian kitchens translates into straightforward yet thoughtful preparations that prioritize ingredient integrity over complexity. This disciplined approach secured the venue a spot on the Le Fooding list for 2026.

Seasonal plates and precise cuts

The menu highlights duck hearts seared until golden and tossed with crisp baby gem lettuce and an anchovy-forward dressing. Tuna tataki arrives sliced thinly alongside raw julienned zucchini and softly charred leeks. A chilled peach soup closes the service, finished with a light dusting of crumbled meringue. This bistro approach balances familiar Provençal ingredients with subtle Asian techniques.

The dining space and cellar

Guests settle beneath the shade of mature plane trees on the terrace or inside a compact room lined with delicate watercolors by Lilosome. Plates arrive on mismatched vintage pieces sourced from local markets. The beverage program pairs these meals with regional organic selections ranging from Châteauneuf-du-Pape to Mont Ventoux. The bistro setting encourages a relaxed pace of dining.

In the dappled shade of the plane trees of Cloître Saint-Pierre, how could you not love Aimé by Ryo Kirikura (ex-Thoumieux by Jean-François Piège and Gare au Gorille in Paris, and La Courtille in Tavel)? An irresistibly charming yet discreet terrace, doubling as a locavore bistro with subtle Franco-Japanese inflections. Inside the tiny dining room, walls adorned with delicate watercolors by Lilosome, dishes parade out on vintage plates thrifted from flea markets. On this summer evening: daring duck hearts, juicy and golden brown, scattered over crisp baby gem lettuce slicked with anchovy-spiked Caesar dressing – a joyful Japanese-Provençal mash-up; followed by exceptional tuna tataki, sliced with precision, paired with raw julienned zucchini and ultra-tender charred leeks – a combo that cheerfully set the tone for the rest of the meal. To finish, a seasonal chilled peach soup simply topped with crumbled meringue for just the right whisper of sweetness. Yes, we’ll say it again: how can you not love Aimé? · Marcellin Caillou
