The story
Le Saint-James, perched on the heights of Bouliac—a village known as the Balcony of Bordeaux—offers a dining experience that is both intimate and grand. Just 15 minutes from the city center, the restaurant occupies a historic 18th-century farmhouse that was reimagined in 1989 by the celebrated architect Jean Nouvel. The result is a space where clean, contemporary lines meet the warmth of amber tones and natural materials, all set against a panoramic view of the Garonne valley and the city of Bordeaux.
This is a place with deep roots. The estate began as a vineyard domaine in the 1700s, later became a fashionable bar in the 1930s, and was transformed into a gastronomic destination by restaurateur Jean-Marie Amat. In 2024, a thoughtful renovation by Laurent Maugoust preserved Nouvel's bold vision while refreshing the interiors with a warm, luminous feel. The restaurant now holds a Michelin star, a recognition of its commitment to high-quality cooking that draws on the region's bounty.
Le Saint-James is a true gourmet destination, offering two distinct dining tables. The main Restaurant Le Saint-James is the gastronomic table, where the kitchen presents refined modern cuisine. For a more relaxed experience, Restaurant Orama offers a bistronomic menu. A bar and a cooking school complete the experience, making the property a hub for food lovers. The cooking school invites guests to go beyond the plate and learn the techniques behind the dishes.
The setting is a key part of the appeal. The restaurant sits within a four-hectare private estate, surrounded by greenery, with outdoor seating that allows diners to fully absorb the views. The wine list is notably interesting, reflecting the property's location at the heart of Bordeaux wine country. Whether you come for lunch, dinner, or a private event, the atmosphere is one of serene elegance—a place where the past and present coexist without fuss.
