The story
Just outside Bourgoin-Jallieu, in the hamlet of La Grive, Lo Fieu brings a distinctly convivial spirit to the table. Its name, in the Dauphinois patois of co-owner Oriane Hubert’s grandfather, means “the fire.” And fire is the heart of the place.
Housed in a spacious barn, the restaurant is built around a central hearth where flames dance. A large communal table anchors the room, surrounded by smaller tables, all arranged so diners can watch the cooking. An old bread oven warms gratins, while an upper-level drying chamber hints at the charcuterie to come. The setting is unpretentious and authentic, with mismatched vintage tableware, copper basins, and milk pails.
The spirit of sharing is formalized here: each table appoints a volunteer “chef de table” to serve the large, family-style dishes. The kitchen, recognized with a Michelin Bib Gourmand for its good quality, good value cooking, focuses on the cuisine of the countryside. Expect slow-simmered dishes, remarkable cheeses and charcuterie, and stunning pâtés en croûte. The open fire concentrates flavors, and the menu naturally includes classics like gratin dauphinois and boeuf bourguignon.
The wine list is equally generous, featuring local and regional grapes, with regular winemaker evenings that stretch the pleasure of a shared meal. Lo Fieu is a place for long lunches and dinners, where the cooking tastes of friendship and the joy of the table is paramount.
