Chef Stéphane Carbone leads the kitchen, crafting a modern cuisine rooted in local products from both sea and land.
The story of this spot begins in 1899, when a small refreshment stand was built on the same site. Known then as the "Buvette de la Gare," it served passengers of the steam tramway connecting Caen's port to Hérouville. After the war, a new chapter began, eventually leading to the restaurant that stands today.
Inside, the dining rooms are tailored to different moods. The coveted tables along the canal side are limited, so booking a week or two in advance is wise for those wanting a waterside view. A second room accommodates groups of up to 30 people. For warmer months, the covered pergola—heated by radiators when the season turns—can host up to 40 guests.
L'Espérance adapts its offering to the seasons. From April to September, Sunday lunch features a brunch formula. From September to April, the service returns to its classic format. Throughout the week, the restaurant is open from Wednesday to Saturday for lunch and dinner, and on Sunday for lunch only. This flexibility, combined with private parking and wheelchair access, makes it a practical choice for both casual meals and larger gatherings.
