The story
Below the château of Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, in the heart of the Lot valley, the Auberge du Sombral has been a family affair since 1971. Housed in a beautifully restored village building, it is the only hotel within the medieval hilltop town. The restaurant serves straightforward, generous country cooking rooted in the local larder.
The menu changes with the seasons and what is available. Typical dishes include pan-fried pleurotus mushrooms baked in pastry, a terrine of semi-cooked duck foie gras with a homemade chutney and four-spice crumble, and truffled fresh goat cheese with a mesclun salad and truffle-oil vinaigrette. A long-cooked piece of farm pork (seven hours) and a vegetarian option are always on offer. The wine list leans heavily toward organic, biodynamic, and natural bottles, priced from 22€ to 39€.
The restaurant’s honest, market-driven cooking earned it a Michelin Recommended distinction for 2026. The dining room is simple and welcoming, with outdoor seating available. The set lunch menu – starter and main for 24€, or all three courses for 28€ – makes it an easy stop for travellers exploring the Causses du Quercy. The hotel’s eight rooms, including one triple, offer a place to stay right in the village.
